Ingredient Illuminated: Plankton Extract

Ne'er cast a clout till May is out as the saying goes, but I think we all agree that we’ve had quite enough of the weather we’ve had this spring and the sun finally showing itself is a very welcome break. But with the sunshine comes the UV and its skin damaging rays, cue the dreaded age spot. It’s a little reminder that SPF should be an essential part of our skincare routine.

Age spots, liver spots or melasma, whatever you want to call them are flat, brown and sometimes grey or black spots or patches typically appear on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. They are primarily caused by prolonged exposure to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds. This triggers the production of melanin and overtime repeated exposure can lead to overproduction of melanin in certain areas and age spots appear. Unfortunately ageing also contributes to hyperpigmentation and age spots. As we age our skin’s ability to regenerate and repair itself decreases. The cumulative effects of sun exposure over the years can lead to the formation of age spots as the skin's natural mechanisms for repairing UV-induced damage become less efficient.

Other contributing factors include, hormones, genetics, life stresses and inflammation as they can all influence the cells that produce melanin (melanocytes).

But how can you get rid of them, or at least fade them? They are one of the trickiest of skin concerns. To help control them you need to decrease inflammation and increase cellular turnover. Here at KELSEY we’ve included some fabulous pigmentation fighting ingredients in our range – Micro-Algae. It can be found in both our Three Moons Brightening Concentrate and also in our Morn to Eve

It also has anti-inflammatory properties so helps to soothe and calm the skin. Inflammation can contribute to increased melanocyte production. Rather cleverly, this micro-algae also stimulates cell turnover, which can fade acne scars, smooth rough patches, and refine the skin's surface for a more youthful complexion. A sort of 2-for-1 deal!

We’ve also included another micro-algae, Lactococcus Ferment Lysate in Three Moons and Midnight Reset. This works to help the skin resist visible signs of aging that are caused by sun damage. This probiotic ingredient has been shown to effectively help cellular growth and turnover, meaning your skin can heal faster and brighter skin is revealed.

With these little illuminating wonders in our Three Moons it’s no wonder we call it our Brightening Concentrate! But please remember, as Baz Luhrmann told us, wear sunscreen!
